Thirty years ago two sisters disappeared from a shopping mall. Their bodies were never found and those familiar with the case have always been tortured by these questions: How do you kidnap two girls? Who’ or what’ could have lured the two sisters away from a busy mall on a Saturday afternoon without leaving behind a single clue or witness?
Now a clearly disoriented woman involved in a rush hour hit-and-run claims to be the younger of the long-gone Bethany sisters. But her involuntary admission and subsequent attempt to stonewall investigators only deepens the mystery. Where has she been, why has she waited so long to come forward? Could her abductor truly be a beloved Baltimore cop? There isn’t a shred of evidence to support her story, and every lead she gives the police seems to be another dead-end’s dying, incoherent man, a razed house, a missing grave, and a family that disintegrated long ago, torn apart not only by the crime but by the fissures the tragedy revealed in what appeared to be the perfect household.
A review - Linda Emond gives a wonderful performance, using different voices and accents to bring immediacy to the many characters and circumstances. Her pacing adds to the mystery and never leaves the listener in doubt as to the time frame and setting. Anyone who ever questioned why Lippman has won every major crime fiction prize will stop wondering after hearing this wonderful production. Highly recommended for adult and teen collections.

InAudibe and Overdrive gave the titles but did not filter out the annoying music that ended and began the original disks. I hope text was not edited out along with it….J

This is a terrific novel, and I’m super happy this one has been uploaded again after a long absence.
But I must say, I like it when audiobooks include bits of music at the beginning and end, and/or between scenes, etc. I never find it annoying, so long as it’s not toooo drawn out.
I thought, for instance, that Ross MacDonald’s Zebra-Striped Hearse, is great fun to hear, as it uses music, sound effects, and multiple voice actors (including Ed Asner and J. Tilly) with excellent results, imho. (And no, it’s not a dramatization. It’s unabridged, word for word.)
I did, however, listen to the Zebra-Striped Hearse audiobook at something like 1.3 speed, removing awkward-seeming pauses, and keeping the story moving along at a brisk pace.*
* Audiobooks 20-30 years ago were narrated/read at a faster pace, I think. For example, check out audiobooks by Frank Muller, like The Great Gatsby, Moby Dick, etc. (I was hitting the rewind button every couple mins back then when I first started with audiobooks, because I’d miss much if my mind wandered for just a few seconds.)
Nowadays, I think Audible has slowed things down deliberately, to ensure audiobooks are more accessible to newcomers.
Not that any of this is relevant

I think this music would have driven you out of you mind repeated 6-7 times. It is the same begins and ends the recording.
