A hugely enjoyable romp through the pleasures and pitfalls of setting up home in a foreign land’ PD Smith, Guardian
When she was suddenly given the opportunity of a new life in rural Jutland, journalist and archetypal Londoner Helen Russell discovered a startling statistic: the happiest place on earth isn’t Disneyland but Denmark, a land often thought of by foreigners as consisting entirely of long, dark winters, cured herring, Lego and pastries. What is the secret to their success? Are happy Danes born or made?
Helen decides there is only one way to find out: she will give herself a year, trying to uncover the formula for Danish happiness. From child care, education, food and interior design to SAD, taxes, sexism and an unfortunate predilection for burning witches, The Year of Living Danishly is a funny, poignant record of a journey that shows us where the Danes get it right, where they get it wrong, and how we might just benefit from living a little more Danishly ourselves.
Helen Russell is a journalist and former editor of MarieClaire.co.uk. She now lives in rural Jutland and works as a Scandinavia correspondent for the Guardian as well as writing a column on Denmark for the Telegraph.

This isn’t so true. In my travels, I’ve met many many Danes. They aren’t happy with the near 50% income tax and the length of time it takes to even be seen by a doctor, let alone any follow-up actions should they need surgery.
No. I haven’t read the book, but unless it’s satire, Denmark is FAR from the happiest country.

@SolidSnake
You are absolutely wrong. I live in UK and went to Denmark, Sweden and Norway only last year. Excellent places to live even by European standards. A bit too expensive for me but I don’t get paid in Krone which I got loads for my £s but I couldn’t afford to live there on my British salary. People are OK and they get by without running after money like maniacs as they do in the Anglo-sphere. You can choose and are allowed to live small and within your means unlike UK where you are told to borrow and spend from all sides. Money is not ubiquitous and consumption is a bit low-key compared to the UK.

Well we’ve ruled out Denmark and the UK.
Audio, I agree that the pursuit of money doesn’t lead to the greatest happiness, so I’ll eliminate the US.
So where is the Happiest Place to live?
