What we do to the soil, we do to ourselves.
Soil is the unlikely story of our most maligned resource as swashbuckling hero. A saga of bombs, ice ages and civilizations falling. Of ancient hunger, modern sicknesses and gastronomic delight. It features poison gas, climate collapse and a mind-blowing explanation of how rain is formed.
For too long, we’ve not only neglected the land beneath us, we’ve squandered and debased it, by over-clearing, over-grazing and over-ploughing. But if we want our food to nourish us and to ensure our planet’s long-term health, we need to understand how soil works - how it’s made, how it’s lost and how it can be repaired.
In this ode to the thin veneer of Earth that gifts us life, commentator and farmer Matthew Evans shows us that what we do in our backyards, on our farms and what we put on our dinner tables really matters, and can be a source of hope.
Isn’t it time we stopped treating the ground beneath our feet like dirt?

Soil salinity was main factor in the collapse of the first civilization - Sumer. They knew it, and told TPTB that they should leave some areas fallow & plant barely instead of wheat, but like TPTB today they were short team power hungry c-words. The king’s army & lifestyle ran on wheat, like the American empire runs on refined crude oil. Eventually, wheat would no longer grow in any Sumerian crop land due to high level of soil salinity (irrigation + evaporation). Barley was more salt tolerant, so they went full court press planting that, until the level of salinity was so high nothing would grow, combined with other dumb greedy short term moves - COLLAPSE of the first civilization. Our civilization is bigger and super complex and today’s elites & followers push a denial narrative that is criminal/evil. Humans are deep into global Overshoot + runaway climate change. Eventually you will have to face it.

*Human security at risk as depletion of soil accelerates, scientists warn - May 7, 2015*
.
“Steadily and alarmingly, humans have been depleting Earth’s soil resources faster than the nutrients can be replenished. If this trajectory does not change, soil erosion, combined with the effects of climate change, will present a huge risk to global food security over the next century, warns a review paper authored by some of the top soil scientists in the country.”
