When the Egyptian journalist Mona Eltahawy published an article in Foreign Policy in 2012 titled “Why Do They Hate Us?,” it provoked a firestorm of controversy. The response it generated, with more than 4000 posts on the website, broke all records for the magazine, prompted dozens of follow-up interviews on radio and television, and made it clear that misogyny in the Arab world is an explosive issue, one that engages and often enrages the public.
In Headscarves and Hymens, Eltahawy takes her argument further. Drawing on her years as a campaigner and commentator on women’s issues in the Middle East, she explains that since the Arab Spring began, women in the Arab world have had two revolutions to undertake: one fought with men against oppressive regimes, and another fought against an entire political and economic system that treats women as second-class citizens in countries from Yemen and Saudi Arabia to Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya.
Eltahawy has traveled across the Middle East and North Africa, meeting with women and listening to their stories. Her audiobook is a plea for outrage and action on their behalf, confronting the “toxic mix of culture and religion that few seem willing or able to disentangle lest they blaspheme or offend.” A manifesto motivated by hope and fury in equal measure, Headscarves and Hymens is as illuminating as it is incendiary.

… really? Really? Wow…. Talking about historical and geopolitical ignorance…
Yeah, sure. They could use a ’sexual revolution’. Of course they kind of needed legally codified and culturally agreed upon civil rights first.
That’s for the upload through. But not, you know, a lot.

Not sure why your response is so dismissive GhostDogGsoD. Listen to the book first.

While I sympathize with where Ghost is coming from, the problem here is mostly religion. I’m not sure any kind of civil rights could possibly be agreed upon for women in that atmosphere without there being a St. Luthor kind of revolution first where the old ways are set behind. Then again, even in America a symbol of oppression in the guise of “modesty” is being portrayed and (worse) RESONATING as progression and freedom. It’s the biggest con in modern politics. The west needs a revolution, too, because at the moment we’re useless to help women in oppressive regions.

Luther? Really? When people talk about an Arab “reformation”, they forget that the Christian Reformation involved ~150 years of genocidal warfare, and every party (including Lutherans and Calvinists) violently persecuted their opponents. Germany only developed religious tolerance (and even then only of the three “official” confessions - Calvinism, Lutheranism and Catholicism) after the Thirty Years War, which depopulated the country by ~40%. In France it took the bloody experience of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic period before religious tolerance was enshrined in law, while Catholics experienced severe legal and political restrictions in the UK into the late 19th century.
By contrast, the Arab world has experienced remarkable moments of tolerance in the past, but the process of emerging as “modern secular states” following the experiences of colonialism, brutal dictatorship and now, in some states, revolutions and civil wars is a slow process of cultural, political and social change. Putting it all down to religion ignores that many religious movements like the Muslim Brotherhood were a direct response to the violent, largely secular, dictatorships in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Iraq and Syria. That’s not to excuse groups like the Brotherhood, or Daesh for that matter (although they’re more complicated), but we have to understand the Arab World and its current relationship to Islamism in its historical context, instead of pretending that the Arab world exists (and has existed) in some perpetual religious quagmire.
